Racism........
by Sandra D. February 7, 2007 8:41 AM

2007 and racism is still a topic of concern, interest, debate. Wouldn't it be a wonderful world if it was eliminated or is that really just a dream?

It's 2007 and after wars, protests, deaths, sacrifices, blood shed, memorials.... we are still looking racism in the face and experiencing it everyday. How sad. How scary. How sad and scary it is that with all the past efforts to eliminate racism, it is still here. Were these past efforts done in vain? It's scary to think, what our children and our children's children and so forth will have to go through and experience, because of race....racism! What have or are the leaders of this "great country" doing to eliminate racism...nothing. It's obviously not a topic of concern. What if our current leaders were faced with racism everyday...hmmm, then I guess it would be a topic of concern. Where are the leaders of today who have a passion to end racism like Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, JFK, Jimmy Carter.....I don't know too many who will make the history books. It seems like the fire has fizzled... Yeah, there's Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton...but in the grand scheme of things they don't have the fervor of those in the past. That leaves it up to us to make a difference. Those who have been affected, those concerned, those who care about human rights.

How far have we come to understanding and eliminating racism...not far. How sad. How scary. How unfortunate. How disappointing. How long a road we have to go.

One lesson my mother taught me, "Baby, you belong to the human race!" That's what I'll instill in my children. I wish every mother could let their child know that that they belong to the human race!

hmmm!! Racism! This such a big thing? I think that every parent should teach their children the importance of their race, no matter what is portrayed. Let them know without our blood, sweat and tears America would'nt be so. Blacks are admired in so many ways and have no reason to worry about their culture, or the color of their skin. We strive and struggle just like any other race. So all those evil words or thoughts that come across don't mean a thing when it comes to the real.

Racism, is it ever going to go away?  In my opinion, NO I don't think so.  Many people say that they are not racist, but deep down everyone has always made a racist comment even if they said it without realizing it.  Although my parents are United State citizens, they are not from the United States.  Up until they were in their late teens, they were never around other races, but their own.  Once having my older sister and I, they started to experience more and more of other races, cultures, and beliefs because we had friends of many other races.  Although they are accepting of this, we know that if we would marry or date a male who is outside of our race, culture, and religion; they would be upset and disappointed.  I'm pretty sure this is the same with many other families although parents may say otherwise.  I sure know that my parents say otherwise, but deep down I now that they will still be upset.  Since racism has been going on for so many years and there have been many people who have influenced the United States, there is still much racism today and there will always be.

Racism is interesting.  I am of American Indian, Arab, and Norwegian descent.  I look phenotypically like a cross between an Arab and an American Indian, so I can easily slide between these groups with ease, and am readily accepted among members of the American Indian community.  When in a place with Arabs, I also am readily accepted.  Nonetheless, I am over 1/2 Norwegian, yet do not exhibit northern European traits.  Among Norwegian Americans (my mother is a full-blooded Norwegian) I am scorned as an outsider - having been called a "*** baby" by members of my maternal family when a child. Obviously race matters and racism exists.

My children, whom have lived on an American Indian reservation their entire lives see things differently than I do.  Their mother (my wife) is white, yet they often say racist things about "white" people.  They look primarily caucasian, due to their mother and my backgrounds - yet they think in terms of themselves as non-white due to their cultural background.

Racism exists...race exists...but it is perception that drives it.  Just ask my 12 or 14 year old what they are...they will tell you they are not white.  In fact, they will be offended if you said so.

I live in Africa so race always has been and I suspect always will be omnipresent - interestingly but not surprisingly (for an African) a survey was conducted by The Star newspaper (I think) a few weeks back in which survey it imerged that the majority of black South Africans who complained of racism effecting their daily lives - wait for it - from other black South Africans.

At present it is assumed in North America that whites are the matrix and anyone else is more important or valuable. An example of this is that my children have Central American background on their dad's side and mixed caucasian on mine. We jokingly refer to ourselves as 'trailer trash', so 'white privilege' doesn't play much role in our history. My daughter was asked to bring a food 'from her cultural background' to school. She brought her favourite dish, macaroni and cheese. Shortly afterward, I was advised by the school that she had 'issues' with 'racial shame' because she did not bring something from her dad's culture--the important one, I suppose! Why isn't my cultural background considered equally valid? This kind of thing happens a lot these days. If one celebrates something specifically caucasian, it's supposed to be 'offending' everyone who isn't. It's gotten to the point where entire communities don't get to celebrate important aspects of their culture, in case one single person might be 'offended'. It ends up that loads of people don't get to actually have their culture anymore. Anyone (besides me) remember Christmas pageants? However, everyone else does get to bring their culture into schools, into the workplace, and into public life. This kind of a double standard isn't ultimately going to help anything. Either we ignore everyone's festivals and celebrate only completely neutral holidays, or we celebrate absolutely everything, which is logically ridiculous.

"Baby, you belong to the human race!"  I LOVE THIS!  Your Mom was a very wise woman.  I may actually have to begin using this with my kids.  I always have tried to teach my children to treat others EQUALLY.  Don't judge on color, religion, sexual preference, etc.

I think everyone needs to get over it all. Hello- How about we start up all white colleges, or how about white only channels or award programs or churches. Every race has a right to trash whites. But if you're white? God forbid you ever say anything even remotely "off color" about any other race. You want to know who is descriminated against? Ask someone who is white who is no longer allowed to do a dang thing because it might upset someone who isn't white. Quit blaming everyone about your situation, whatever it may be. You are in charge of your own destiny. No one can make you feel inferior unless you let them. End of story.
