Why race/RACE?
by Bill B. February 21, 2007 8:43 AM

In thinking of a topic for one of the first RACE blogs, the question(s) "Why race/RACE?" seemed as good a place to start as any.  So, here goes...

From my perspective, we need to learn about race and address racism...

  • Because, as a young child, I knew two Johnson families, whom I identified as "the black ones" and "the white ones" to everyone's honest amusement and with absolutely no value judgment
  • Because by the time I was in high school, I'd learned that no "white boy" could (should) take me off the dribble (though it was ok for him to make a jump shot)
  • Because by the time I was in high school, I'd been told through various media worse things about myself
  • Because today some scientists and doctors think that humans come in biologically distinct races
  • Because today some scientists and doctors think that humans don't come in biologically distinct races
  • Because race, racism and class go hand-in-hand-in-hand (see Hurricane Katrina)
  • Because Ward Connerly claims he's just getting started
  • Because Kramer isn't funny anymore

So, why has the American Anthropological Association undertaken RACE as a public education program?  Well, because it's hard to fully appreciate something, like human diversity, that you don't really understand.  And because anthropologists can and should do this.  And because none of us really has a choice; race is "growing" (more on this later) and becoming even more, not less, important in our everyday lives.  What do you think?

Humans DONT come in biological distinct races, so then why make a big deal about.  The more you talk about something without doing something about it, the more power you give it it.  You inadvertently increase "racism" by placing such emphasis on it.   Yes, it exists...but its more psychological than biological and it should be treated as such.  Of course something must be done but its with ACTION not words where the real changes are taking place.

I'm 70 years old and I have only seen one "White" person.  On the sixteenth mall in

denver, I saw a "Mime" performing.  He had a Painted, White Face.

The only "Black" persons I've seen was in my youth, the "Endmen" in a high school minstral had black shoe polish on their faces.

Haveing said these things, I'll try to make the point that Caucaians are pinkish-brown and Negros are brown, some dark, some light. But none are "White or Black".  To continue to so deleniate the races by polerizing the extreems of oppisets instead of seeking some middle ground is counter productive.  So lets begin by no longer referring to each other by a color but by the name given to them at birth.

Are there any others who could, more elloquintly make the case that I have tried to?  GOD Bless This Land !

We most definately must address racism. I believe that the underlying cause of racism is lack of exposure to different "races" and the stereotypes perpetuated by the media. I think the media needs to become a bit more egalitarian with the things that they show and say on television, because there are so many people out there that believe and dwell on everything thay hear and see. Sometimes, some people are make somewhat racist comments without even knowing it, I have had a friend or two that referred to everything having to do with "blacks" as ghetto or "that's so black" or "that's so chunga (in miami, supposedly a "ghetto spanish girl")". It irritates me, and I always ask, why must it be ghetto. There are so many other things I could say about things friends have said naively, not knowing that I would take offense to it, merely because they were using stereotypes to describe things or people.

If there is any difference among human beings, besides their genetic and phenotypic variations it is culture/ ethnicity. Everyone can associate themselves with a culture which influences the way we think, generate appropriate behavior, explain things, see the world etc. "Race" should become less of a hot topic and so called differences between races should be thrown out of the window and we should focus more on understanfiding others' cultures, which makes a person the way they are, mentally, so that we may enrich our own selves and be better able to communicate with others.

And if we do move to learning about other cultures and beliefs, no inferiority or superiority should be applied to the cultures, that one is especially for Americans who tend to rank countries/cultures based on how advanced their technology is.

LETS GET RID OF THIS IDIOTIC RACE CONCEPT THAT ONLY SERVES TO OPPRESS SOME AND AID IN THE ADVANCEMENT OR CONTINUED ADVANCEMENT OF OTHERS.

Sometimes I believe that talking about race makes it a bigger deal and blows it up more then it should be blown up but I also believe that people who aren't educated about race and aren’t left to understand race trough the media and their families, they will have better idea of what race is and the different kinds of race in the world.  That is not to say that race isn’t a subject to be talked about with family; to enhance understand different aspects of race and racism.  Families who have been put through racism and segregation will tell a story of race differently to their children and there for the child will view race differently then from there own experiences.

I guess a few of my questions to people are:

Does or has race defined who you are?

Has your family shaped you into what kind of race you identify with?

What does race mean to you?

Race ? What are we running towards?,what is our goal?,Where is the finish line? Folks, don't let the world bring you down.We are beautiful people and we are in control.

Race does have importance now; it is a defining mark whether you want to believe it or not. It didn't always exist, but it does now. Maybe it's just because of this city I know of (Milwaukee, WI), but the different 'races' seem to have developed thier own cultures and identities. People of the same 'color' or orgin seem to migrate near each other and set up communities just as. Haven't you noticed a difference between 'Black', 'White', 'Asian', and Hispanic communites? They all have their own cultures and what defines them? - Race.

Race is important in today's world (or at least the United States) because it gives certain groups opportunites that wouldn't be presented to them, like a Black-only scholarship fund. However, by doing this it defines the definition even more. If we wanted to break down the race barrier we would have to get rid of minority-only programs and the like. We can't say there are no differences among us if we continue to have opportunities like these.

Still, because many 'races' live in thier own communities, economic hardships can hit them due to the current idea of race and that is why we have special programs for them. If we drop the programs to stop the classification of race, then these groups will lose opportunites that would have been there if we had classifications. It's kind of a catch 22.

The question of race and colour will never ceize to amaze me. I am still austounded at the fact that world leaders not to mention the general world population still think there is a clear delineation of colour!! Who said most poeple of African origin are BLACK?? And who said Caucasians are WHITE?? This conspicously expresses how desperately the human race needs to be teated for colour blindness! And that's for real. Human being shave well been known to create their own peril. Tagging one black or white is one other such example.

People of African origin according to my sight are either light or dark brown and Caucasians are from pinkish to brown(dark or light). Everyone is adapted to their own geographical boundaries. Please, for cying out loud- can we stop using the words white or black for people becasue they just dont exist!! For the sake of those who view this witha grain of salt, white is the colour of this background you are reading and black is possibly the colour of your keyboard. Does that make sense. Hopefully so.

What a load of hooey. A culture that tolerates public spitting, for example, which communicates disease, IS inferior to a culture that does not tolerate public spitting and recognizes that limiting the spread of disease is important. There are limits to multiculturalism; all customs are NOT equally valid.

My husband and I have read so many discussions and arguments about racism that we decided to actual do something about it so we came up with a design that states we are all one race human.  Please visit out site at www.oneracehuman.org and join us in showing the world leaders we mean business.

The trouble is that it's very easy to assign culture, education, and class with race until they become synonimous, and then you start assuming that people of that race ascribe to that culture, have that education level and are of a lower/higher class than people of another race. It's way too easy to forget that people from one racial group - caucasian, asian, african, etc - come from many widely differing cultures. If we just lump them together then we don't have to go to the effort of thinking about the differences, or accomadating them in any way. It's a cop-out, the shorter, easier route, but it's not the whole story. From what I've seen, race is about class as much as it's about anything, and people fight tooth an nail to maintain that their race is better than anothers in fear that they'll end up at the bottom of the ladder of humanity.

It's important to study race so as to gain perspective on how the minority groups in this world are being treated and to study the negativity that is being generated in their lives. It is important to make the world aware of how "race" is the most demeaning tool for indentification and is completely and utterly baseless and meaningless. If race is studied, it can hopefully help the younger generations come to recognize that it is time to let go of it and begin a new cycle of life which is free from racial-identification.

In my writing of the Isis Papers by Francis Cress Welsing, I found something that I think about on a regular basis: the words America, if moved around, spell out the phrase: "I am race."

What does this mean to you?

Is this just an accident?

I feel as if the idea of race is blown out of proportion a lot and that is serves to compound other unneccessary problems. In consideration of such a fact, do people really want to live in peace or is it easier to struggle?

Seemingly, with the emphasis that is put upon race, people love the struggle and world peace is an unattaible ideal.

I feel that world peace can be attained, by the way.
